Human Trafficking

What is Human Trafficking?
One of the main focuses at SPARKLE is Human Trafficking around the world. It is happening in our own neighborhoods and in cities around the world. At SPARKLE we are dedicated to making sure that all who are interested find as much information as possible so that they can make an informed decision about getting involved either domestically or internationally.
But what is human trafficking?
Human trafficking is the practice of people being tricked, lured, coerced or otherwise removed from their home or country, and then compelled to work with no or low payment or on terms which are highly exploitative. Victims of human trafficking can be used in a variety of situations, including prostitution, forced labor (including bonded labor or debt bondage) and other forms of involuntary servitude (read here: slavery).
But do not be fooled into thinking it isn't happening in your town. Much of today's human trafficking happens in our own cities and towns. There is no rule that says you have to be taken from your country or even your state to be trafficked. I can happen anywhere and to anyone. There are between 100,000 and 300,000 minors who are victims of trafficking in the United States. The are all American citizens. Your daughter, your granddaughter, your BFF.
Human trafficking is the fastest-growing criminal industry in the world. It is a $44 BILLION industry. Do the math - 44 BILLION dollars! The United Nations estimates nearly 2.5 million people from 127 different countries are being trafficked around the world.
If this tears at your heart you have come to the right place. Get involved. Start a discussion at your church, your school, your place of business and start educating yourself and others to these atrocities. You can find more resources on our RESOURCE page.
